Democratic Rep. Ocasio-Cortez pile up Fines for a five-year-old unpaid tax warrant.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, is accruing penalties for failing to satisfy a state tax warrant issued against her company five years ago.

 

It’s ironic that the socialist legislator who wants to raise taxes on many Americans has reportedly refused to pay her own taxes.

“On July 6, 2017, New York State issued a tax warrant against Ocasio-2012-founded Cortez’s Brook Avenue Press publishing company to recover $1,618 in overdue corporate taxes. The outstanding balance of the tax warrant increased by 52 percent to $2,461 as of Wednesday afternoon since Ocasio-Cortez has not made a single payment toward her past-due business taxes, according to the Washington Examiner.

“State corporate records indicate that New York terminated Brook Avenue Press in October 2016. About two months after Ocasio-Cortez began her victorious primary campaign against former Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), the state filed its tax warrant against her defunct company, according to the Examiner.

The Bronx County Clerk’s Office verified the existence of an active tax warrant against Ocasio-company. Cortez’s

AOC contended in 2019 that she was not made aware of the tax warrant against her former company until after she had been sworn in as a member of Congress in January of that year.

After initially stating that she would pay her past-due corporation tax bill, Ocasio-Cortez changed her mind and now says the warrant was issued “in error” and that she is contesting it with the Bronx County Clerk’s Office.

“The congresswoman’s challenge of the tax warrant is still pending. Since the company has been shut down for a while, we think the state Tax Department has been wrong to keep collecting the franchise tax, Lauren Hitt told the New York Post in May 2020.

“It takes time, as everyone who’s tried to fight an incorrect tax bill knows,” Hitt continued.

According to The Washington Examiner:

Ocasio-Cortez stated in her 2018 financial disclosure report submitted to the House that she was the creator of Brook Avenue Press. Ocasio-Cortez probably has the money to cover her delinquent taxes on her business. During her first three years in the House of Representatives, the politician earned a total of $522,000 before taxes from her congressional salary.

Ocasio-Cortez asked on high-income earners to pay up to 70% more in taxes as one of her first acts as a member of Congress in order to pay for her comprehensive Green New Deal climate policy program.

It was revealed in April that Ocasio-2018 Cortez’s campaign and that of her former chief of staff concealed about $1 million in expenditures.

Following a two-year investigation into claims that Saikat Chakrabarti, the former chief of staff for AOC, had routed the spending through two political action groups, the Federal Election Commission disclosed the records.

Nevertheless, notwithstanding the FEC’s conclusions, a complaint brought by the National Legal and Policy Center in March 2019 against the self-described New York democratic socialist was dismissed by the agency’s six-member panel.

According to Paul Kamenar, NLPC counsel, “The FEC has pursued a huge lot of individuals whose offenses are dwarfed by the size of this scheme.” “Prosecutorial partiality appears to be involved instead of prosecutorial discretion,”

According to the group’s complaint, Sakrabarti, Llewellyn, and others routed more than $1 million in political donations through two companies that he controlled. Llewellyn served as Ocasio-campaign Cortez’s treasurer.

 

According to the initial complaint, the cash transfers from two political action committees to Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats may have exceeded the $5,000 contribution cap for federal candidates.

The NLPC claims that the FEC held off on making public disclosure of its investigation’s results for more than 30 days, possibly in an effort to stave off legal action, according to a representative for the NLPC.

Director of the NLPC’s Government Integrity Project Tom Anderson noted that the FEC’s decision to issue its statement of reasons after the time for us to file suit was “very uncommon.”

He continued by saying that the group immediately filed a legal challenge without waiting for the agency’s conclusions.
