A former Democrat state senator and party chairwoman were arrested for wire fraud after allegedly using campaign money for gambling.
Karen Peterson, a former Louisiana state senator and 5th Congressional District representative, resigned in April, citing mental health and “gambling addiction.”
She led the Louisiana Democratic Party from 2012-2020.
Peterson needed more than $100,000 from the Black Lives Matter PAC to win Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District.
Peterson is accused of scamming political funds for at least seven years.
U.S. Attorney Michael Simpson said in a court filing that Karen Carter Peterson founded the Karen Carter Peterson Campaign Fund (KCPCF) to attract individual and corporate contributions. Simpson: “As a Louisiana state senator, Peterson ran a campaign.” “Campaign contributions were acquired based on assertions and the idea that the money would benefit Peterson’s reelection,”

She held control over Louisiana Democratic Party campaign funding. She allegedly utilized part of the money for herself.
Prosecutors accuse the disgraced Democrat of diverting campaign funds for personal expenses, including gambling. According to the U.S. attorney, she added insult to injury by asking for further donations without disclosing that she used prior gifts for herself.
Peterson may get 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release. Peterson’s next court date is August 1.

According to court documents, Peterson led State Political Party A from 2012 to 2020 and was a Louisiana state senator from 2010 to 2022. Peterson founded and administered the Karen Carter Peterson Campaign Fund (KCPCF) while a Louisiana state senator. Donations were solicited for Peterson’s reelection as a state senator. Peterson intended to use KCPCF campaign funding to collect money and property from KCPCF supporters by making false and fraudulent promises and representations for approximately seven years.
Using the KCPCF account, she issued checks to friends and acquaintances, told them to pay them, and got the money back. Peterson exploited KCPCF cash for personal needs, including gambling. She didn’t mean new contributors while collecting money. Peterson’s campaign finance records indicated expenses for her benefit, not her campaign or the office she sought.
Dillard University political analyst Robert Collins called it a magnificent collapse.
Collins says she was strong and from a political family.
“Most people would consider this worse than wasting your salary on a gambling addiction, which is horrible enough,” he added.
