Steven Arthur Martis, 77, of Bullhead City, Arizona, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Diane J. Humetewa to 21 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. In a jury trial that took place on November 18, 2021, Martis was found guilty of one count of making an interstate threat to murder or damage Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
Martis contacted Speaker Pelosi’s Washington District Office from his home in Bullhead City, Arizona, on January 17, 2021, and left two voicemails. Martis is a member of the Democratic Party. Martis threatened to murder the recipient of his first voicemail, saying, “I’m coming to kill you…” Martis followed up with a second voicemail, in which he informed the recipient that “you’re dead… ” Martis made these two phone calls after the Federal Bureau of Investigation contacted him and told him that he had made similar calls before.
The investigation in this matter was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with support from the United States Capitol Police. The prosecution was conducted by Assistant United States Attorneys Kristen Brook and Joseph Koehler, both of the District of Arizona in Phoenix.
This individual was sentenced to fewer than two years in jail.
Trust me, I’m not a fan of Nancy Pelosi by any means, but that statement seems to be at an exceptionally low level of sophistication.
