President Donald Trump announced that he is going to ban Tik Tok, the Chinese video sharing app from the United States Of America, stating that he would sign an executive order on Saturday.
Top US officials have recently expressed concerns over the video platform that is being used for nefarious purposes.
The company however denied any links to the Chinese government.
“As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” Trump told reporters.
In response to Trump’s threat, A TikTok spokesperson cited the U.S investment and involvement with the app, which also includes over 100 million American users and almost 1,000 people hired to the company’s team in 2020.
“TikTok US user data is stored in the US, with strict controls on employee access. TikTok’s biggest investors come from the US,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We are committed to protecting our users’ privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform,” he said.
Earlier this week, TikTok stated that it would observe a very high level of transparency, including allowing review of its algorithms.
