Prosecutors leading the criminal tax fraud investigation against Donald Trump and The Trump Organization abruptly quit after being appointed to Manhattan District Attorney, putting considerable doubt on the long-term sustainability of the probe into Trump and The Trump Organization.
According to a person familiar with the investigation, the prosecutor’s evidence presented before a grand jury had been halted for a month before his sudden retirement.
Prosecutors Carey R. Dunne and Mark F. Pomerantz volunteered their resignations after new Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg expressed severe doubts about pushing through with the prosecution’s case against the two men.
On January 1, Bragg became the city’s first African-American district attorney. One of Donald Trump’s most high-profile issues was the investigation of his business dealings. Although the reason for Bragg’s withdrawal is still unclear, he had previously said that he intended to spend the majority of his time and attention on the issue before taking office.
At the time, Bragg told CNN that the incident “deserves the special attention of the DA” when asked about it in December. Bragg has been sentenced to jail.
Bragg’s probe is “dead,” according to former Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Bromwich, who cited the resignations and withdrawals from the inquiry. He quickly rushed to Twitter after learning of it and wrote: “The resignation of two key investigators/prosecutors Means the end of the Manhattan District Attorney’s criminal case. ”
Ex-District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. initiated the investigation into Trump’s companies in 2018. It aimed to find out whether Donald Trump had exaggerated the value of his assets to get better terms on his loans from banking institutions in the first place.
This investigation is further hampered by the fact that the grand jury’s term expires in April. Although prosecutors can ask juries to increase a defendant’s sentence, this practice is common. In general, prosecutors avoid convening another grand jury after the evidence has been presented to a current grand jury, anticipating that re-interviewing witnesses might lead to contradicting testimonies.
An accountant acquainted with Trump’s financial accounts was asked to testify before a grand jury last year by then-DA Vance. Deutsche Bank, Trump’s longstanding financial backer, has a new witness.
It seems as if this investigation is winding down, but the New York Attorney General’s office is increasing its investigation into the Trump Organization. According to former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, Trump inflated the value of the companies’ assets to get better loan and insurance terms.
Donald Trump and his two children will now be questioned under oath by James. As a result, James has filed court documents showing the Trump Organization’s misrepresentations of property prices. She can sue Trump even if she can’t bring charges against him.
