Democrat Mayor Caught Stealing Roughly $1,000,000 In Public Covid Funds

One of the newest cities in metro Atlanta is Stonecrest, Georgia. It acquired its charter in 2016 and is situated not far from Atlanta. There is a mall there as well as a 2,500-acre wildlife reserve. Prior to it being uncovered that he had embezzled $650,000 of COVID-19 relief funds, Jason Lary, who advocated for the area to be incorporated as a city, served as mayor. He was found guilty and given a 57-month prison term as punishment.

According to WSB Radio, Lary utilized COVID relief funds to settle his own debts and granted gifts to small businesses and churches. Additionally, it is said that Lary donated other relief funds in return for bribes to the corporations he owns. For instance, he agreed to give his church $150,000 in exchange for them returning $50,000 to him.

According to US Attorney Ryan Buchanan:

“Lary stole the same cash intended to aid his constituents in the COVID-19 pandemic, betraying the faith that the people of Stonecrest had placed in him. The residents of Stonecrest deserved more, and dishonest public servants can anticipate harsh repercussions for abusing their positions to perpetrate crimes.

“Frankly, people, it’s become ugly now. Nobody ever had a vested interest in “kickbacks,” “money-filtering,” or any other silliness like that.

In September 2021, Lary stated at a city council meeting:

“You don’t acknowledge the Mayor Pro Tem and the council, and you simply leave me standing there as if I’m not a part of the meeting. The only caution I’m going to give with this is that the next time it happens, I’ll show you my hairy rear.

He then declared that the council was trying to harm him as he was receiving colon cancer treatment.

Mayor Pro Tem George Turner said, “What the mayor said was unacceptable and does not represent city council.”

In response to the comments, the city council voted to condemn Lary.

On January 5, the day his resignation became effective, Lary entered a guilty plea to federal fraud charges after earlier declaring he would not enter a plea.
