Jussie Smollett, the actor who was convicted of creating a hate crime hoax in December, has now learned what will happen to him in court.
Judge James Linn sentenced the former “Empire” star to 150 days in prison, 30 months of felony probation, a $25,000 fine, and restitution to the city of Chicago on Thursday after he was found guilty last year of lying to Chicago police about being the victim of a hate crime in the city.
After the decision was announced, Smollett exclaimed, “I am not suicidal,” as he continued to declare his innocence. “I DID NOT ENGAGE IN THIS. I don’t have any suicidal thoughts. You must all be aware that if something happens to me while I’m in there, you will be informed. “I’m not suicidal, therefore I don’t want to go to jail,” he stated.

As he walked out of the courtroom, he continued to yell, “I’m not suicidal, and I’m not guilty.” “I could have admitted my guilt a long time ago,” says the author.
According to CNN:
On a freezing night in January 2019, two unknown males assaulted Smollett, hurled racial and homophobic insults at him, threw bleach on him, and put a noose around his neck, according to Smollett’s account to Chicago police.
Police in Chicago first thought the event was the result of a hate crime, but they quickly realized the actor was the mastermind behind it all. They allege that he bribed two brothers from the Fox drama “Empire” to fabricate the event in order to get attention for his business.
During the trial, seven witnesses testified for the defense, including the Osundairo brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo. According to their testimony, Smollett hired them to orchestrate the incident in order to get favorable press attention.
Forcing them to use racist and homophobic language, he said they fake struck him, drank bleach on him, and tied his neck, they said.
It was the brothers’ workout and diet advice that Smollett sought from them, according to testimony he provided in his own defense. A claim of a sexual connection with one of the brothers was disputed by the other, although he threw doubt on their genuine motives.
Nenye Uche, the actor’s attorney, stated that he disagreed with the judgment and believed that his client will prevail on appeal.
According to Smollett’s lawyer, he is “100 percent convinced” that this will be overturned on appeal. “We hope justice will win at the end of the day.” (In December) this did not happen, but we are optimistic that he will be proved innocent and freed.
Darren O’Brien, the former Cook County prosecutor who predicted that Smollett would not be sentenced to jail, said that one of the reasons his bail was not revoked was because the actor had no previous convictions.
It’s common practice to revoke bail if someone is likely to be taken into prison, according to him. “That’s another more sign that he won’t be going to prison,” I said.
Joey Jackson, a CNN legal commentator, said that the actor faces probation but “exposed himself to prison time” when he testified.
Judges have a better idea of what you say when you testify in court, he said. “That jury rejected everything Jussie Smollett stated with an overwhelming majority. He couldn’t get the jurors to believe what he was saying. Judges are aware of that. “You created your way into the courtroom.”
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped the charges in return for Smollett forfeiting his $10,000 bail and doing community service.
After a court-appointed special prosecutor, another grand jury indicted the actor, who was convicted in December on five of six criminal counts.
Smollett was charged with six counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly fabricating a hate crime.
Smollett faked the incident, then lied to police about it for attention, the prosecution said jurors in closing arguments.
His lawyer stated the prosecution’s case was fabricated.
In addition to being illegal, the prosecutor said it was immoral to belittle a serious crime like a hate crime by using terms and symbols that have historical meaning in our society.
“He loses any credibility,” he remarked.
His lawyer stated the prosecution’s case was fabricated.
“The prosecution’s case is a house of cards,” he remarked.
