When asked what he would say if Russia attacked Ukraine under his watch, former President Donald Trump dropped a bomb.
On Friday, John Daly teed up an explosive comment during a phone interview with No Pops Golf. Trump claimed Putin “kind of” believed him when he allegedly threatened the Russian president that the US would “strike” Moscow if provoked. The film doesn’t show the complete dialogue that inspired Trump to say this, but it comes while Russia has been attacking Ukraine for almost a week.
“It was never done during my tenure, John, you should know,” Trump said to Daly. “It’s something we’re all talking about. Why hasn’t he done this in the past four years, you could wonder. Because he was well aware that he couldn’t.”
Putin did not invade Ukraine when Trump was president, a claim that Trump has repeated many times in recent days to contrast himself with Vice President Joe Biden, arguing that the Russian leader would not have dared attack out of fear of what the Trump administration would do if he had done so. Critics of former President Barack Obama say that by weakening the NATO alliance, he strengthened the Russian government.
During his chat with Daly, Trump also said that he had made a similar warning to Chinese President Xi Jinping about an invasion of Taiwan during the same time period. The president of the United States said that “Taiwan will be next” and that China would “bomb them off the map.”
