US Government Prepares To Supply Protective Equipment To Nursing Homes

The administration of President Donald Trump is gearing to send a one week supply of personal protective equipment to over 15,400 nursing homes, which for weeks have been seeking for more PPEs against The COVID-19 ravaging their facilities.

The shipments will be coordinated by FEMA and it’s set to kick off the first week of May and be completed in mid-June, The shipments will provide some immediate help, but the FEMA document acknowledges the facilities’ greater need for more protective gear.

Nursing homes have struggled to obtain the not readily available equipment during the pandemic, even as the virus has killed over 10,000 of it’s residents and staff in long-term care facilities across the U.S.

Mark Parkinson, the president and CEO of the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living, said to newsmen on Wednesday that :

“The inability of long term-care facilities to obtain equipment, particularly face masks, over the last few weeks and few months has proven to have tragic results,”

The protective gear for nursing homes is being provided through a $110 million contract FEMA signed on April 23 with W.S. Darley & Co., which makes equipment for firefighters and emergency services.

The Trump administration’s plans to send protective equipment to nursing homes was first reported last week, but details on how the federal government would distribute the supplies have not been earlier reported.
