Sen. Ted Cruz, who was visibly frustrated, attacked FBI Director Christopher Wray and his organization in a heated exchange on Thursday during an oversight hearing.
The Texas Republican occasionally slammed his boot on a table while criticizing Wray for “thoroughly politicizing” the agency.
Cruz, a senator from Texas, asked about what he described as an FBI training document that had been obtained by the investigative news organization Project Veritas. Cruz said the document “listed various symbols and themes which in the FBI’s opinion were indicative of’militia violent extremism.'” Wray was being questioned by senators at the time.
Cruz reportedly noted that the Betsy Ross flag, an early rendition of the American flag with 13 stars in a circle, the Gadsden “Live Free Or Die” Flag, and the Gonzales battle flag were among the symbols listed in the allegedly FBI training document. Cruz then removed one of his boots and slammed it against the table to demonstrate to Wray that it bore a picture of the Gonzales flag.
I will self-report right now that I wear my boots with the Gonzalez battle flag on the back every day in the Senate, he said.

What are you doing, Mr. Wray? Cruz continued, pointing to a visual mock-up of the Project Veritas training aid that was sent behind him, saying, “This makes no sense. “Do you concur with this FBI recommendation?”
“I will tell you that when we put out intelligence products, including ones that reference symbols, which we do across a wide variety of contexts, we usually make great pains, take great pains to put caveats and warnings in the document that make clear that a symbol alone is not considered evidence of violent extremism,” Wray said in response, adding that he was unfamiliar with the specific training tool that Cruz posted and therefore could not comment specifically on it.
Cruz retorted, again alluding to the purported FBI training manual, “Director Wray, you don’t include things like Antifa.” “Things like Black Lives Matter are not mentioned. Instead, you cast suspicion on Americans who are patriotic.
Regarding the alleged document, the FBI provided Newsweek with the following statement:
“It is standard operating procedure for us to refrain from commenting on stories involving purportedly leaked FBI materials, internal FBI products, or data shared with law enforcement partners. In this instance, we would draw attention to the fact that a website article citing a purportedly leaked document on symbols that Militia Violent Extremists (MVE) may employ includes the words highlighted in bold near the top of the document: As many people use these symbols for their original, historical meaning or other non-violent purposes, their use or sharing should not be taken as proof of MVE presence or affiliation or as an indication of illegal activity.
It’s unclear which “online article” the FBI was alluding to, but on Wednesday, The Epoch Times featured a graphic in a story about the training manual that was leaked to Project Veritas:
Project Veritas received a leak of the “Domestic Terrorism Symbols Guide,” and on August 2 posted pictures of the document on its website and social media. It features well-known pictures like the Liberty Tree, the Betsy Ross flag, and the Gadsden flag.
Terms and symbols used in the document are widely used in conservative, law enforcement, and military circles. The FBI emphasized in the introduction that merely using the terms or symbols does not constitute proof of wrongdoing.
The bulletin states that many people use these symbols for their original historical meaning or other non-violent purposes. Therefore, using or sharing them alone should not be viewed as proof of MVE presence or affiliation or as an indication of criminal activity.
The bulletin also notes that MVE networks frequently make use of symbols and quotations from American history, particularly the Revolutionary War, according to The Epoch Times. “MVE symbols often have historical and modern military themes.”
Wray is a Commiecrat who has no business running the FBI. He has allowed and continues to allow tons of illegal acts to occur, and crimes to happen; while persecuting law abiding citizens.
